So Much to See and Do

Tekapo is a small alpine town perfectly situated halfway between Christchurch and Queenstown. Visitors come here for the striking beauty of the area, or to stargaze in the Southern Hemisphere’s only International Dark Sky Reserve.

Here the sky is so clear that millions of stars seem suddenly visible. Very limited light pollution ensures the viewing remains pristine. The Dark Sky Reserve is one of only a handful in the world. While you’re here, take the time to look up, study the galaxies and stars, and feel connected to the awesome story of the universe. Keen stargazers will see beautiful constellations that can only be seen in the Southern Hemisphere, including the Southern Cross, to the Magellanic Clouds and the Milky Way.

If you enjoy the outdoors, there is no limit to the adventures awaiting you – walking, cycling, camping, tramping, hunting, fishing, skiing, boating, and the list goes on.

For those on a schedule, Tekapo’s central location – just a 3-hour drive from both Christchurch and Queenstown Airports, with private charter flights to our local airfields also available – makes it the ideal destination for a quick weekend getaway. If you’ve got more time to explore, there’s so much to see and do in the legendary Mackenzie Region, and Tekapo is the perfect base.
